Google представила бета-версию фреймворка Flutter, который позволяет создавать приложения для iOS и Android. Компания рассказала об обновлении сервиса на Mobile World Congress 2018.

Visual Studio Code.

Google обещает разработчикам значительно сократить время написания приложений. Например, этому должна помочь функция «горячей перезагрузки»: она позволяет менять код и видеть изменения на странице в режиме реального времени.

Waverly Labs offers real-time translation with its Pilot earbuds

Sometimes you travel all the way to Barcelona, only to meet up with a startup that’s been operating right around the block. Waverly Labs is a 20 person Brooklyn-based company that specializes in real-time translation through a pair of Bluetooth earbuds.

The startup is on-hand at Mobile World Congress this week, showing off Pilot, its first piece of hardware, which launched at the end of last year. The product is the culmination of four years of research on both the hardware and software side of the equation, funded by a wildly success Indiegogo campaign that netted the company $4.4 million (around 3,000-percent of its initial goal).

The startup also scored an additional $1.07 mill in equity crowdfunding through StartEngine, rather than seeking out VC. VP of manufacturing, William Goethals tells TechCrunch Waverly went the full crowdfunding route so as to avoid having to give into the whims of investors. With all of the money it’s managed to drum up by way of excited consumers and the fact that it actually managed to launch a product, all of that appears to be a fairly sound business strategy — for the time being, at least.

Of course, Pilot is far from the only player in the real-time wearable translation space. The category is booming of late, including, most notably, Google’s Pixel Buds. Though unlike those headphones, this  offering is translation first. And honestly, they’re pretty big for a pair of Bluetooth earbuds, so you probably wouldn’t want to use them your go-to headphones.

Also, unlike the Pixel Buds, the Pilot’s earbuds aren’t tethered together. In fact, they’re meant to be shared (but maybe pack an alcohol wipe, if other people’s earwax creeps you out). When you need help translating, you can hand the other bud to someone and have them sync it up with the own phone, and the Pilot will do the inverse translation, listening for speech and speaking the words into your ear.

Our demo was, admittedly, in a pretty loud environment, so the hardware has some trouble catching all the words, but the translation did come through fairly quickly. According to Goethals, the company developed its own translation software in-house, but uses a wide number of third party sources to cross check its accuracy.

The Pilot is currently up for purchase through Waverly’s site for $249 — nearly $100 more than Google’s admittedly mediocre Pixel Buds.

Nokia 9 cases appear once again hinting a curved display

The Nokia 9 is expected to be one of the main attractions in the booth of Nokia at the upcoming MWC. Unsurprisingly, it is a flagship device which has been the staple of the rumour mill since last year. The most recent sighting of the device was in the hands of an HMD official. That was quite blurry and almost useless. The handset has already passed the FCC way back in December. Here we take a look at newfound cases of the handset.

As has so often been rumoured, the Nokia 9 is supposed to come with a curved display. That is indeed very rare in the flagship segment as Samsung currently rules the roost with the Galaxy S8. The cases clearly emphasize that design aspect of the phone as they have very small corners. The cases also have cutouts for a dual camera on the back of the device and for a fingerprint sensor. The Nokia 9 is also rumoured to come with dual selfie cameras.

As for the rumoured specs, we draw our information from its FCC listing. Nokia 9 sports a 5.5-inch OLED display sourced from LG, as per info. Under the hood, the Nokia 9 houses last year’s Snapdragon 835 chip which might be a letdown. The FCC listing showed Android Oreo on board the device backed by a 3,250mAh battery.

After the FCC listing, the Nokia 9 has been rumoured to launch many times but hasn’t yet gone public. We reckon it will surely break cover at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.

It seems that LG is going to “play it safe” this year, as the Korean company decided to delay the official launch of its LG G7 flagship. Instead, they will probably improve one of their most successful smartphones that made an impressive launch last year. Yes, we’re talking about the LG V30s, the improved variant of their 2017 flagship that really impressed most of of us with its price, specs and performance.

Recent rumors say that LG will go for the improved version of the V30 this year at Mobile World Congress, packing 256GB of storage in the device, along with LG Lens, a feature that will bring AI features to its imaging capabilities. Rumor has it that this LG Lens technology will be able to translate text and show online product listing while snapping an image of a product.

It will also offer bar-code recognition and QR code support but this isn’t something ground breaking of course. No need to worry about the rest of its technical specs, as the V30s is expected to keep all the hardware of its predecessor. This means that it will be equipped with a 6-inch FullVision OLED display with QHD+ resolution, Snapdragon 835 chipset, 16-megapixel dual rear cameras, 5-megapixel selfie camera, 3,300mAh battery.

All the recent info suggests that the upgraded LG V30s model will be announced during MWC 2018 and it will hit the stores on March 9 – starting from South Korea with a price tag of approximately 1 million won (~$919).

That’s all we know so far, keep in touch to find out more info on this subject.

Samsung just sent out invites for the announcement of its next flagship smartphone. The Galaxy S9 will debut February 25 at Mobile World Congress. The show starts at 6pm CET (noon ET, 9am PT).

The one piece of information the teaser gives us is that the camera is "reimagined." This is most likely a reference to the variable aperture camera that Samsung is already shipping on the W2018 flip phone. Just like a real camera, it has a set of (very small) aperture blades that open and close with the changing light levels. In ideal lighting, the W2018 uses an f/2.4 aperture, but it can switch to f/1.5 if it needs to pull in more light. If you haven't seen it in action, this .gif of the W2018 camera is a must see.

Other than the fancy camera, the Galaxy S9 is expected to look a lot like the Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S8 was a total overhaul last year, and Samsung rarely (never?) does back-to-back redesigns. The camera information—which now looks pretty legit—came from a Reddit box leak.

The other new feature on the box? Stereo speakers. The earpiece will probably double as a second speaker, with the usual bottom-firing speaker playing along with it. Of course, there will also be a spec bump, with the Snapdragon 845 expected to ship in the US version.
